Blight

The somewhat unfortunately-named Blight is a venetian blind made with flexible solar cells (and electroluminescent foil) that can light a room at night. The blind provides a large surface area exposed to sunlight, and the blades can be turned to catch the most sun as it moves. When used as a lamp, the Blight can be placed in a variety of positions; the energy can also be used to power other devices, through the use of an inverter. This conceptual design was a finalist in the 2009 Greener Gadgets competition. The designer didn’t list information about the environmental impacts of producing flexible solar cells; it would be interesting to compare those impacts to the impacts of the electricity saved.
